Harlan Spencer

Harlan K. Spencer, age 91, passed away Monday, January 3, 2011 at Heritage Hill Assisted Living in Caro, following a lingering illness. Harlan was born February 11, 1919 in Richmond, Michigan, the son of the late Ivy L. & Ethel C. (Erwin) Spencer. He was united in marriage with the former Gladys A. Stephens on December 24, 1942 in Angola, Indiana, and left for Army duty the following day. Following his service during World War II, Harlan returned to his employment with Prestolite in Bay City. In 1958 he owned and operated the Western Auto Store in Sandusky for four years before returning to Prestolite, retiring from there in 1980 after thirty-five years of total employment. Harlan enjoyed working in his yard, both in Caro and at their cabin up-north near Hale. After nearly fifty-eight years of marriage, the love of his life, Gladys, preceded him in death on December 7, 2000. Surviving are their three children and their spouses, Sheldon L. & Carole Spencer of Oakley, Michigan, Jan & Ron Botkins of Caro, Allen R. & Peggy Spencer of Watrousville; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Harlan was preceded in death by one infant brother, Harold Spencer and one sister, Ethelyn Spencer.
