Harlan Steffen

Harlan S. Steffen, age 86 years, of Midland, formerly of Caro, passed away on Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at Brittany Manor Living Center in Midland. He was born on June 30, 1919 at Columbia Corners. Harlan served in the United States Marine Corps from December 11, 1942 until May 14, 1946. He was a combat wounded veteran, nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor and awarded the Navy Cross. Harlan Steffen and the former Reva Byington were united in marriage on May 2, 1943 in Yuma Arizona, Reva preceded him in death on June 19, 2001. They were longtime Thomas Township, Saginaw County, residents, moving to Glennie and returning to Caro prior to moving to Midland. During his working career he was a federal employee, working for the Soil Conservation Service in Saginaw County. Following his retirement, he and his wife enjoyed nineteen years as snow birds with a home in Florida. He enjoyed hunting, camping, and his tree farm on Deckerville Rd. In addition to his membership at the Caro United Methodist Church he also belonged to the Saginaw Valley Travel Club, and life member of Saginaw 4 D.A.V., V.F.W. Post #4164 Caro, and the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Harlan is survived by his son, Tem Steffen and Tina Forbes of Saginaw; two granddaughters, Samantha Steffen of Jacksonville, Florida and Kristine Steffen and her fiance Robert McMahon of Delaware; one great-granddaughter, Haley Steffen; one brother and his wife, Gale and Patricia Steffen of Caro; one sister-in-law, Marie Steffen of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, James Otto Steffen; a grandson, Christopher Edward Steffen; his siblings and spouses, Lewis (Jerk) Steffen his wife Eleanor, Clare Steffen, Creole and Russell Stock and Aline and Myron Smith. The funeral will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Duane Miller officiating. Burial will be at Almer Township Cemetery with military honors afforded by Caro V.F.W. Post #4164. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. On Tuesday the visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to The Freedom Alliance (a scholarship fund for children of deceased military).
