Harold D. Ayres, age 86 years, of Vassar, died at his granddaughters residence in Sebewaing on Friday, January 12, 2007. Harold was born on June 20, 1920 in Ann Arbor. He moved to Caro on August 22, 1970 and to Vassar in July of 1983 and has resided there since. He was a mechanic and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Harold married the former Doris Buskirk, and she preceded him in death in 1957. He then married Grace Diver, and she preceded him in death in 1992. Upon coming to Caro, he first worked at Howard Bell and then for the Village of Caro until his retirement. Harolds tenure with the Village involved working as a mechanic and then as a crossing guard. His final retirement from crossing guard was at the age of 84 years. Harold loved puttering in the yard and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by eight children, Richard Schweikert of Ohio, Sandra (David) Nelson of Sherwood, Alyce (Carl) Jones of Battle Creek, Michael Edwards of California, Mervin (Dianne) Edwards of Indiana, Dodi (Creighton) Burrows of Marshall, William Ayres of Vassar, David Ayres of Akron; his daughters-in-law, Christine Ayres of Caro and Dawn Ayres of Caro; twenty-six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; as well as his special caregivers, Patti Hill and Bill Kaatz. Harold was preceded in death by one son, Donald Ayres, in 1978; one daughter, Nancy Adams, in 1979; two grandchildren; and one great-grandson. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Monday, January 15, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Wallace of the Colling Church of the Nazarene officiating. In accordance with Harolds wishes, cremation will follow the service with burial at Indianfields Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Monday from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Harold D.
