Harold J. Hewitt, age 84, of Bradenton, FL formerly of Elkton, died Saturday morning, July 14, Healthsouth Ridgelake Hospital, Sarasota, FL.
He was born November 13, 1922 in Oliver Twp. at the home of his parents, the late Henry L. and Martha (Staehli) Hewitt. Harold grew up near Elkton and farm with his dad and later, his own farm around the corner from the family farm. He was united in marriage to Mary McKnight on November 26, 1943 in Elkton and raised their family on the farm. He and Mary parted in the late seventies. On July 10, 1981, was united in marriage to June M (Stewart) Ruth in Caro. He retired in 1982 and lived in Caro until moving to Florida in October of 2004. While in Florida he learned and loved playing shuffle board.
Harold was a member of the Orange Grove Free Methodist Church in Florida and a former member of the Elkton Missionary Church.
Surviving are his wife, June; three children, Dwight (Nancy) Hewitt of Houston, TX, Ken Hewitt of Wentworth, MO and Karen (Don) Kerkow of LaCenter, WA; six stepchildren, Arnold (Kathy) Ruth of Fostoria, Kathleen Knoblock of Macomb Twp., Duane (Connie) Ruth of North Branch, Richard (Marie) Ruth of Mayville, Randy (Elizabeth) Ruth of Xlapa, MX and Raymond (Karen) Ruth of Bradenton, FL; 26 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and two sisters, Dorothy (Charles) Overley of Newaygo and Arlene (Venus) Arnold of Goshen, IN.
Preceding him in death were his daughter, Janice Ross, his son, Dennis Hewitt and his brother, Henry Hewitt.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, July 19, at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton. His brother-in-law, Rev. Venus Arnold, retired, will officiate with entombment in the Colfax Twp. Mausoleum, Bad Axe.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 9 PM Wednesday, and after 10 Thursday morning. Memorials may be directed to the Orange Grove Free Methodist Church.
