Harriett L. Collins, age 91 of Pigeon, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the Huron Medical Center in Bad Axe.
She was born May 7, 1923 at home in Sheridan Township, Huron County, Michigan, seventh child of Floyd T. and Mabel E. (Fay) McComb. She moved with her family to Cass City in 1929 where she attended the old Cass City High School, kindergarten through grade 12.
She was married to Asel B Collins June 29, 1941, at her home, and they celebrated 50 years in 1991. They were both employed in Cass City until 1949 when they moved to Pigeon where Asel joined the Pigeon Progress. They later owned the Progress and Progress Advance for 29 years, he as editor and printer; she as advertising manager and bookkeeper. They both retired January 1, 1978. Their whole family assisted in the newspaper printing business at one time.
Harriett was active in Brownies, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and her church. She loved to bowl (50 years), golf (also 50 years), and square danced for 37 years. They were charter members of the old "Town & Country" Square Dance Club. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Pigeon, for 61 years, and was active in UMW, Caseville Retirement Club and the Caseville Library Club pinochle group.
She served the Pigeon Food Pantry for 23 years as secretary-treasurer and was UMW treasurer for 17 years. She loved cards, puzzles, sewing, and was an avid reader. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She maintained her own home and yard into her 90's.
Surviving are four children, Dennis of Charlevoix, Kathleen (Kurt) Thuemmel of Laingsburg, James Asel of Pigeon and Steven of Midland; grandchildren: Amy and David Collins, twins Kristina (Todd) Choura and Kara (William) Day, Jennifer (Lance) Kolhoff, Danielle (Nicholas) Oldham, and Brandon and Nathaniel Collins; great-grandchildren: Hailee and twins Mason and Logan Kolhoff, Samantha Cone, Dylan and Norah Choura, Riley and James Day, and Catherine Oldham; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Asel in 1992, four brothers and two sisters. She was the sole surviving member of her family.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church, Pigeon, with Rev. John Britt, pastor, officiating. A meal will be served in the fellowship hall following the service.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church or the charity of donor's choice.
