Helen M. (Johnson) Witherspoon age 89, was greeted by her son, Tommy and first husband Bill for a grand homecoming Friday, February 21, 2014 when she left her home in Bad Axe to be with her Lord.
She was born July 29, 1924 in Lake Twp. at the home of her parents the late John and Hazel (Santhany) McCormick. Helen grew up in Lake Twp. and graduated from Elkton High School in 1942. She furthered her education , receiving a master’s degree in elementary education from Eastern Michigan University.
On October 19, 1946, she was united in marriage to William Johnson at St Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog. Bill preceded her in death in 1993.
She began her teaching career at Pinnebog School, then Elkton Elementary for a time, retiring from the Flint School System in 1983.
On March 29, 1996, she married Louis Witherspoon in Ruskin, FL where they spent many winters until recent health problems prevented it.
Helen was a former member of St. Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog and enjoyed traveling, playing cards, puzzles and spending time with family.
Surviving are her husband, Louis Witherspoon of Bad Axe, children, William (Stacey) Johnson of Flint, Judy Hartness of Flushing, Joanne (Carl) Gutekunst of Burton, Mary Severn of Flint and Donald (Lisa) Johnson of Pinnebog; eleven grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and her sisters, Marge Kekovich of Caseville and Ann (Joe) Buschlen of Elkton.
Preceding her in death were her son, Thomas and brothers, Robert and Edward McCormick.
A memorial mass will be celebrated at St Felix Catholic Church, Pinnebog at a later date with interment at the church cemetery.
