Henry John "Hank" Markert of Caro, age 87, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro. Hank was born June 1, 1931 in Columbia Township, the son of the late John & Elizabeth (Maul) Markert. He grew up on the family farm in Unionville and graduated from Unionville High School with the Class of 1948. Shortly after graduation, Hank joined the U.S. Army where he served stateside as a radioman and was honorably discharged in 1955. He was united in marriage with the former Katie Russell on June 1, 1957 at Monitor Lutheran Church in Auburn, and the couple has been inseparable for over sixty-one years. He continued assisting the Bader family even after his retirement in 2010, until his health declined earlier this year. Hank was a "John Deere Man", through and through. He was also a gifted wood worker that specialized in bird houses. He and Katie enjoyed traveling, especially trips to Minnesota and Wisconsin to visit close friends. Hank and Katie were also blessed to have visited Europe in 1976 and spent many years working at the Music Festival in Frankenmuth. He was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro where he served twenty-three years as an elder and former chairman of the board of elders. Hank also sang with the church choir for many years and worked with Servant Event. In addition to his beloved wife, Katie, Hank is survived by many dear friends and co-workers that became family through the years. In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death by his siblings, Carl, John and Alex Tripple, Dorthea Willson, Elizabeth Kruse, Robert, Edward and Otto Horst, Ida Willson, Alex, Fred, Christian, Henry and Emily Horst, Marie Geiger, Kathryn Weber, Sophie Barrigar, Emma Nixon, John Markert, Fred Markert, Amelia Bolzman, and Anna Dahlberg.
