Henry Gerald Sugden, Sr.

Henry Gerald Sugden, Sr., of Caro, age 94, passed away on Wednesday, September 22, 2026, while at Hills & Dales Healthcare. He was born on March 4, 1932, in Saginaw, the son of the late Raymond and Grace (Bowers) Sugden.

Henry enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 and honorably served his country for four years during the Korean War.

Following his naval service, Henry continued a life of dedication and purpose. He worked as a police officer and later joined Consumers Energy before spending the majority of his career as a security guard at General Motors.

On December 18, 1982, Henry married Viola Tolfree in Caro. Together, they shared forty-two years of marriage before her passing on November 19, 2024.

Henry was deeply involved in his community and generously gave his time to helping others. He was an active member of the Lions Club, volunteering on the club’s behalf at the Tuscola County Fair and was also a member of the Masons. A man of deep faith, Henry was a longtime member of Caro United Methodist Church. He also served on the board of the Special Needs Vision Clinic, a role that reflected his genuine desire to help those in need.

There were many moments that brought joy to Henry's life, these included camping adventures in Texas with Vi, the years he spent coaching his boy's baseball teams, and the countless ways he gave back to his community. His family will remember his practical nature, his ability to make the most of what he had, and his remarkable talent for stretching a dollar.

Left to cherish Henry's memory are his children, Sue & Don Presley, Carl & Cindy Sugden, Yvonne & Edward "Bud" Dankers, and Henry & Janice Sugden, Jr.; stepchildren, Connie & Dwain Sutter, and Dan & Mary Thorp; and many beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Henry was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Henry will be on Monday, September 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Caro United Methodist Church. The family will be present to receive visitors from 10:00 until the time of service. At a later date Henry will be laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly.
