Herbert J. Strunz of Caro, age 97, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Heritage Hill Assisted Living in Caro. He was born February 18, 1916 in Saginaw, the son of the late Louis & Theresa (Block) Strunz. Herb was united in marriage with the former Geraldine Elliott in Angola, Indiana on January 28, 1941. Prior to being drafted into the Army in April of 1941, Herb was employed as an auto glass installer. Following basic training at Camp Grant, he was assigned to the 1st Coastal Artillery Group at Fort Eustis, Virginia until he was honorably discharged in August of 1941 in order to help his father-in-law with farming. Herbert and Geraldine moved to Caro in 1941 to raise their family. Over Herb's adult lifetime, he was a farmer, bookkeeper and plumber. In later years, he was employed with Michigan Sugar Company in Caro and Caro Plumbing Supply for a number of years. He began his own plumbing business, H & H Plumbing and continued working until he was in his eighties. In his earlier years, Herb spent most of his time cutting wood, a pastime he thoroughly loved. In recent years Herb enjoyed socializing, telling stories of past experiences, playing bingo, checkers, watching televised baseball games and going for rides in the country. He fully enjoyed life. Herb's beloved wife of over fifty-three years, Geraldine, preceded him in death on November 28, 1994. Herb is survived by one son and two daughters, Herbert S. Strunz of Sun City, Arizona, Brenda Mutton and her husband Tom of Gaylord, Lt.Col Kim C. Strunz (US Army Ret.) of Caro; one granddaughter, Rhonda & Anthony Corda of Greenwood, Indiana; two grandsons, Jason Strunz of Caro, Travis & Renee Cragg of Fairgrove; four great-grandchildren and four nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Herb was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Strunz; and one sister, Helen Lokinski. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday November 1, 2013 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. David Myers of the Caro First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial with Military Honors, provided by the Caro American Legion Post #7 and the U. S. Army, will follow at Almer Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to Hospice Advantage, the Salvation Army, or the Tuscola County Humane Society.
