Hisako Champagne

Hisako “Susie” Champagne, 88, of Bad Axe, passed away peacefully under hospice care on September 12, 2024 in Cass City.

Susie was born November 1, 1935 in Yokohama, Japan, to the late Junichiro and Misa Shirai.  She met the love of her life, Peter Champagne, while he was stationed in the US Army in Japan; they married June 18, 1953.

Susie worked for many years at Hammill Manufacturing.  After her retirement she worked for Murphy’s Bakery.  She was a very hard worker and instilled her work ethic to her children.  Susie was a very kind and giving person who had a strong faith in God.  Her hobbies included tending to her flower garden and refinishing antique furniture.

Susie is survived by her daughter Nancy (Don) Bouck; grandchildren Brandon (Lisa), Wes (Tracy), Jake, Ryan (Christine), Robin (Chris) and Heather (Jason); great-grandchildren Tobyn, Emma, Ayden, Brady, Bryce, Hunter, Remmington, Quinton and Hisako; brothers Takinori Shirai of Yokohama, Takeshi (Cathy) Shirai of Anderson, IN and Hideo Shirai of Yokohama; daughter-in-law Cindy Champagne, son-in-law Ron (Gerilyn) Landenberg; several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband Peter, son John, daughter Susan and sister-in-law Keiko.

Visitation for Susie will be 10:00am to Noon on Friday, September 20th at St. Hubert Catholic Church in Bad Axe, a memorial mass will follow at Noon with Fr. Yesu Mulakaleti presiding.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or American Cancer Society.

The family would like to thank McLaren Hospice team and Medilodge of Cass City for their support and care during Susie’s illness.  Special thanks to her hospice nurse Jean, and Jen, her social worker at Medilodge.
