James Wendell Allen, age 78, passed away peacefully at home in McDonough, Georgia, on Tuesday, August 24th, 2021. Jim was born April 11, 1943 in Caro, Michigan, the son of the late Wendell M. & Eva M. (Hall) Allen. After graduating from Caro High School with the class of 1962, Jim went on to enlist in the U.S. Army, where he served for three tours of duty in Vietnam. During his final tour, Jim was awarded the Cross of Gallantry, one of several other awards and honors he would earn for his military service. Upon returning stateside, Jim worked as a recruiter for the Army in Battle Creek, Caro, Saginaw, and several other postings throughout the state. He retired from the Army in Georgia as a Command Sergeant Major, the highest rank achievable for an enlisted soldier. Jim loved fishing, vacationing with his loving wife, and had a passion for writing. He eventually published his own book, “The Path”. More than anything else, Jim loved being with his family. Left to cherish his memory are five daughters and their spouses, Shawn & Shawn King of Caro, Michigan, Jeannie & Andy Bunn of Locust Grove, Georgia, Jill & Doug Matthews of Waterford, Michigan, Rebecca & Mark Goins of McDonough, Georgia, and Jennifer & Dustin Berry of Locust Grove, Georgia; two sisters, Carolyn (Gary) Abke of California, and Mary (Larry) Brown of Defiance, Ohio; thirteen grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine (Wrona) Allen; two brothers, Richard and Jerry; and a great-grandchild, Coastas Dario Cottos. A memorial will be held at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia at a later date when it is safe for family and friends to travel.
