James L. Meininger

James L. Meininger , age 68, of St. Helen, passed away at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, on August 8, 2022.

Jim was born on January 5, 1954, to Frank and Mary Jane (Alexander) Meininger in Cass City, Michigan and was their only child. His grandparents were Nick and Alice Alexander and John and Anna Meininger.

Jim graduated from Owendale High School in 1972. After graduation he went on to work at Walbro in Cass City. After a few years he then took a position at Saginaw Asphalt where he worked in quality control. He really enjoyed his position at the plant. After leaving Saginaw Asphalt, he farmed at Thumb Swine Enterprises with Paul and Ralph Swartzendruber until his retirement in 2015.

Jim had many outdoor hobbies. Anyone that knew Jim would say that he had a great love for grilling, hunting and snowmobiling. In his 20s, Jim was a team member on the semi-professional snowmobiling team "Team Blu" of which won the Soo 500 in 1983. In January of this year, Jim was part of a renewed Team Blu, which won the World Championship in Eagle River, Wisconsin. He and his good friend, Paul Swartzendruber, were able to attend to see this big win in person.

Jim was a member of the St. Helen Snowpackers Snowmobile Club. He enjoyed grooming the snowmobile trails in the St. Helen area where he frequently rode himself. He usually put on thousands of miles each winter with friends that would join him at his cabin in the woods. This cabin was his retreat in his younger years and became his permanent homestead for the past 10 years when he moved out of the Thumb.

Without having a direct family of his own, Jim had many close friends that he would visit when he made his trips to the Thumb. People knew him as "Uncle Jim" and he became a special uncle to many lucky kids, too. A special friend to note is Robby Isler, who he was very close with.

For 30+ years, Jim was part of the Swartzendruber family. Paul, Lori, Jessica, Angie (Bruce) and Jill (Nordberg), as well as their children, considered Jim more than just a family friend. He always had a seat at their table and hardly missed a holiday. Lori made sure his room was ready and favorite meals prepared. Together they would spend memorable New Year's Eve trips at the cabin, snowmobile adventures through the trails, enjoyed Jim's famous grilled chicken and often drinking shenanigans in his shed.

Jim was loved by many and will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at 2:00-3:00 P.M., with a luncheon to follow at the Sebewaing Sportsman's VFW Hall. Donations may be made to the American Heart Association and the St. Helen Snowpackers Club in Jim's honor.
