James William Rhoten

James William Rhoten of Vassar, age 89, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at his winter home in Bushnell, Florida. Jim was born April 12, 1925 in Harrison County, Iowa, the son of the late William and Olive (Fox) Rhoten. Jim was a World War II veteran having served in the U. S. Navy from 1943 until 1952. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the National Square Dance and Camping Association. Jim enjoyed dancing, camping, golfing, bowling, playing softball, hunting, fishing, and tennis; but most of all he enjoyed spending time with family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jim is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Velva Rhoten; five sons and their spouses, James of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Robert and Tina of Forest Park, Illinois, William of New Port Richey, Florida, Michael of New Port Richey, Florida, Patrick and Kim Rhoten of Yorba Linda, California; three daughters and their spouses, Devra and Hugh Fisher of Vassar, Diane and Mark Turner of Deltona, Florida, Dorene and Sam Kruchkow of Munger; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; four brothers and their spouses, Tom of Copolis Crossing, Washington, Lyle and Ellen of Carter Lake, Nebraska, Rex and Janet of Magnolia, Iowa, Paul and Shelly of Magnolia, Iowa; and three sisters and their spouses, Sarah Fitzgerald of Jacksonville, Florida, Agnes Hart of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and Mary and John Keeven of Cassville, Missouri. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Diane Johnson and Wendy Dunlop; two brothers, Glen and Roy Rhoten; and four sisters, Clara Magnason, Doris Konz, Donna LaVell, and Betty Ball. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro with Rev. Michele Hile and Pastor James Davis officiating. Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the charity of their choice in memory of James W.
