Janene Anne Skiba of Presque Isle, age 70, passed away Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Janene was born February 8, 1955 in Flint, the daughter of the late William James and Maxine Mildred (Cronk) VanVolkenberg. Janene graduated from Kearsley High School in Flint with the Class of 1973. After graduation, she pursued higher education at the University of Michigan–Flint and Baker College, where she earned two associate degrees and a bachelor’s degree. Janene worked for General Motors for many years and retired from Buick City in 2000, where she served as a shift supervisor. Outside of her career, Janane found peace and joy in the outdoors, especially when fishing or hunting - two of her favorite pastimes. Her hands were rarely still, whether crocheting with care or preparing a delicious meal in the kitchen. A spirited game player, she never missed an opportunity to play euchre or cribbage with family, friends, or her fellow Eagles members, where laughter and friendly competition always followed. She also had a deep love for good food, and nothing delighted her more than a slice of peach upside-down cake, her all-time favorite treat.
Left to cherish her memory are six children and their spouses, Johnathan & Shannon Troyer, Rochelle (Troyer) & Jon Shoemaker, Donald Troyer, Kadee (Troyer) & Daniel Browning, Leslie (LaPratt) & James Pearce, and Alexander & Gabriela LaPratt; adopted daughter, Mercedes Lovett and her husband, Justice; fourteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and brother, Jerry VanVolkenberg. In addition to her parents, Janene was preceded in death by a brother, James VanVolkenberg.
