Janet Lou Retford

Janet L. Retford, age 83, of Owendale, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021 at Northwood Meadows in Cass City.

Janet was born in Sebewaing on July 17, 1938, to Frank and Mamie (Honeywell) Gettel. She married William F. Retford on December 26, 1960 in Sebewaing. He preceded her in death on June 19, 2012. After high school, Janet graduated from Alma College with a Bachelor's Degree in Education then received her Master's Degree in Education from Central Michigan University. She worked as a First Grade and Reading Teacher for over 35 years, retiring from Owengage Elementary School. Janet also enjoyed knitting, traveling and reading. She was a member of the Owendale United Methodist Church and was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women's Group.

Janet is survived by her children: John (Gina) Retford of Owendale and Linda (Doug) Detterman of Manchester; grandchildren: Adam (Kyleigh McCarthy) Retford, Luke (Natasha Dubs) Retford, Nicholas and Alexander Detterman; great grandson, Jack Retford; brother, Jim (Mary) Gettel of Sebewaing; and many nieces and nephews.

Janet is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings: Robert Gettel and Barbara (Rocky) Svane.

Visitation will be Sunday, September 12, 2021, at Juengel-Mellendorf Funeral Home in Sebewaing from 3-8pm.

The funeral service will be Monday, September 13, 2021, at Owendale United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at the church at 10am until the time of service at 11am. Rev. Bill Cleland will be officiating.

Burial will be at Grant Township Cemetery, Gagetown, MI.

Memorial donations may be given to Owendale United Methodist Church.
