Jay Mitin

November 6, 1919 — July 26, 2013


Jay Mitin, age 93 of Pigeon and formerly of Bay Port, passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Huron Medical Care Facility, Bad Axe.
Born at home in Bay Port, he was the son of the late Walter and Jane (Korotenko) Mitin. He attended Snell School and graduated from Bay Port High School. Jay served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II, and received several medals for his efforts. On May 28, 1949 he was united in marriage to Alta Mae Yantzi in Pigeon. They had celebrated 50 years of marriage when Alta passed away on June 16, 1999.
Jay farmed throughout his lifetime. He was a Christian and a faithful man of God. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon where he previously served as Sunday School Treasurer, as well as on the Administrative Council and the Board of Trustees. In his retirement Jay also enjoyed volunteering with various maintenance work at Bay Shore Camp.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and John Reabe of Collierville, Tennessee and Rebecca "Becky" and Bryan Miller of Boyne City; son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Debbie Mitin of Okemos; daughter-in-law, Caye Mitin of Virginia; grandchildren: Andrew, Amy (Steve), Meagan, Melissa, Amanda, Lauren, Tiffany, and Eric; great-grandchildren, Paige and Jack; brother, John (Marge) Mitin of Pigeon; sisters, Mary (John) Leipprandt of Caseville and Clara Secor of New York; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Dennis; brother Alex; sister Anna Pulcifer and an infant sister.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Salem United Methodist Church, Pigeon, with Rev. David Stewart, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in New Bay Port Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Bay Shore Camp, Salem United Methodist Church, or a hospice of choice.
