Jean A. Bauman, age 90, of Elkton died Tuesday morning, September 5, at Satchell’s Christian Retirement Home, Caro.
She was born January 25, 1916, in Peoria, Illinois to the late Alva and Inez (Ullrich) Hardy.
On June 28, 1940, she was united in marriage to Stanley A. Bauman in Detroit. They moved to Elkton in 1942 from Montgomery, MI, when Stanley accepted the band director’s position for Elkton High School. They continued living in Elkton the rest of their lives. He preceded her in death February 24, 1983.
Jean spent the biggest part of her life raising her family and teaching them the love of music and the skills to carry it out. Much of her life was spent teaching piano and dramatic art, having 100’s of students over the years.
She starting speaking at church at age 14 and continued until age 76, preaching and teaching in churches revival meetings, mother/daughter banquets and local civic organizations. She was a strong supporter and very involved in Bay Shore Camp as Vesper speaker for the youth. In 1978, she was named Mother of the Year for the State of Michigan.
Jean was a member of the Elkton United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She taught Sunday school and led Bible studies for adults and youth for many years.
Surviving are seven children, and theirs spouses, Kennistan (Bonnie) Bauman of Concord, Sharolee (Jake) Roberts of Scottsbluff, NE, Audrejean (Alan) Heydenburg of Grasslake, Roneldon (Kay) Bauman of Flower Mound, TX, Dwight “Ted” (Jeri-Gene) Bauman of Colorado Springs, CO, Deanna “Dee Dee” (Russ) Tibbits of Caro and Tamara (Elroy) Kosters of Caro; 16 grandchildren, Jeff (Diane) Bauman, Annalisa (Jamie) Brigham, Michael (Pam) Bauman, David (Christy) Roberts, Owen (Bridget) Roberts, Julie Roberts, Jonathon Roberts, Robert (Melissa) Heydenburg, Alicia (Mike) Dickens, Chris (Melissa) Heydenburg, Kelly (Charlie) Dierke, Kevin (Aubyn) Bauman, Kari (Chad) Beauchamp, Haley Bauman, Melody Tibbits and Megan Tibbits; twenty four great grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Marie Hardy of Virginia and Helene Hardy of Detroit.
Preceding her in death were a grandson, Kurt Bauman and two brothers, Warren and Malcolm Hardy.
Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 AM Friday, September 8, at the Elkton United Methodist Church with burial in Pierson Cemetery, Howard City.
Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 4 to 6 and 7 to 9 PM Thursday and at the church after 9:30 AM Friday.
Memorials may be given to the Elkton United Methodist Church.
