Jim Compo

James R. Compo of Caro, age 78, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Select Specialty Hospital in Saginaw, following complications from a recent surgery. Jim was born March 16, 1935 in Pinconning, the son of the late James & Anna (Nepsa) Compo. He enlisted while still underage to serve in the 1st Cavalry Division of the US Army during the Korean War. Jim was united in marriage with the former Barbara Sue Ayre on July 11, 1981 in Caro, and the couple celebrated more than thirty-two years together. Jim graduated from Saginaw Valley State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice, and spent more than forty years in law enforcement, serving as a sheriff's deputy in Bay County, Chief of Police in Reese and Gagetown, and retiring from the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department in 1998. Jim was also a member of the Tuscola County Dive Team, Sheriff's Posse and was an Accident Reconstructionist for the Tuscola County Sheriff's Department. His passion was hunting and promoted responsible gun use as a life member of the Tuscola County Conservation Club, the National Rifle Association, Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners and taught hunter safety classes for over forty years as well as concealed pistol courses. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, Caro VFW Post 4164, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited and the McDonald's Coffee Club in Caro. Jim was a dog lover, especially for his Yellow Labs, Buffy and Razz and Brittany Spaniel, Skip. Left to cherish Jim's memory are his wife, Barbara Sue Compo of Caro; four children and their spouses, Neal & Kim Compo of Deford, Terry & Joyce Compo of New Baltimore, James Compo, Jr. of Ventura, California, Gail Ryan of Caro; six grandchildren, Shawna, Joseph, Kevin, Amy, Kristy and Jaime; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Askevich and Jennifer Ray; one brother, Alan Compo; and many nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by four siblings, Leonard, Wilbur, Nancy and Joyce. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro with Rev. John Weis officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro with military honors rendered by the Caro VFW Post 4164 and the US Army. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association.
