John Edward Gray, age 88, of Caro passed away on Friday, January 28, 2011 at his home. He was born on June 10, 1922 in Deford to the late Harry W. and Susan E. (Pelton) Gray. John grew up in Sanilac County, and enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served until his retirement. John Gray married the former Dorothy Chaffee in 1967. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2004. In civilian life he worked in a number of factories, and for years worked as a bartender at the Pub in Caro and the Vassar Eagles Club. He enjoyed playing pool, gardening, growing flowers and the people at the Big Boy in Caro. He was a very active member of the Caro Eagles Aerie #3587, having served in many positions as well as attaining the stature of Golden Age Eagle. He is survived by five step-children, Gail Mosack of Bad Axe, Shirley Foster of Caro, Ronald Lorf of Fairgrove, Marlene Anger of Fairgrove and Judith (Lyle) Anker of Cass City; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Beekman of Warren and Susan Guilds of Vassar; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward and Marvin Gray in 1928; two sisters, Pauline in 1931, and Doris Hall; and a son-in-law, Wesley Foster. The funeral service will be held at the Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 3: 00 p.m. under the auspices of the Caro Eagles Aerie #3587. Cremation will be followed by burial at Almer Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. until time of service at 3:00 p.m. Memorial honors will be rendered by Caro V.F.W. Post #4164. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
