John Gromek, age 90 years, of Independence Village, Frankenmuth, died suddenly on Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Covenant Health Care-Cooper in Saginaw. He was born on August 17, 1915 in Detroit to the late Peter and Helen (Rosinski) Gromek. John moved to Vassar as a youth and graduated from Vassar High School. He married the former Madge Taylor in Saginaw, Michigan on January 27, 1940. In April of 1945 he entered the US ARMY. He served until the end of WWII and on to the Japanese occupation. In their early married life, John and Madge lived in Saginaw where he worked as a tool and die maker for General Motors as well as in real estate as a broker and appraiser. While employed at General Motors he was president of U.AW. Local #467 and also edited the “Transmitter”. Later the Gromeks purchased the Euclid Motel in Bay City and operated it until their retirement. While in Bay City he was a founding member of the Bangor Township Optimist Club and belonged to the Euclid Ave. Businessmen. John was an accomplished businessman as well as an all around handyman and spent hours working on a variety of projects. He enjoyed his second homes, from the cottage up north to Linwood Beach, to Fort Meyers, before settling on the Taylor family farm outside Caro. John most recently attended the First Presbyterian Church of Caro as well as Theron W. Atwood Sr. American Legion Post #7 and the D.A.V. In addition to his wife, Madge, John is survived by three children and their spouses, Gloria and Don Loudy of Northville, Pastor Virginia and Tom Defoe of Saginaw, Gaines and Amy Gromek of South Lyon; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jannis Taylor of Farwell; as well as several nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by all of his siblings, Henry Gromek and his wife Viola, Edward Gromek and his wife Rose, Amelia Schnell and her husband Clarence, Walter Gromek and his wives, Monica and Phyllis. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Caro on Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Melissa DeRosia officiating. Military honors will be afforded by Theron W. Atwood Sr. American Legion Post #7 of Caro. Cremation has taken place and burial will occur at the Indianfields Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the First Presbyterian Church of Caro on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Caro or the D.A.V.
