Joseph Szcygiel of Caro, age 86, passed away on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at his home. Joe was born May 28, 1932 in Vassar, the son of the late Joseph & Stella (Szrukewcz) Szcygiel. He graduated from Mayville High School with the class of 1950 and later played AAA baseball for the Flint Arrowheads as a pitcher. His passion for baseball endured his entire life and he volunteered for many years as a Little League coach. Joe enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1952 and was shot down and wounded while serving as a wing gunner in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and was married the following year to the former Barbara Sochocki. She preceded Joe in death in 2010. Joe's first career was with GM Fisher Body in Flint, but spent his retirement years focusing on the family greenhouse and produce business that remains today. He possessed a love and passion for fishing and will be remembered fondly as a tireless worker and "Jack of all trades." Joe is survived by four children, Joey Szcygiel and his fianc, Patty Welch, of Caro, Teri Szcygiel and her fianc, Dan Malkowski, of Caro, Tony Szcygiel and his fianc, Kerri Walker, of Caro, Linda & Jacob Caldwell of Millington; eight grandchildren and their spouses, Chad Szcygiel of Caro, Rodney & Corinn Szcygiel of Mayville, Rebekah & Curt Gabes of Ohio, Philip & Melissa Szcygiel of Caro, Anthony Walker of Caro, Nicholas Waun of Lapeer, Christopher Waun of Washington, Tammy Cooper of Columbiaville; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Joe was preceded in death by two daughters, Joanne Szcygiel and Bonnie Cooper; three siblings, Stanley, Anthony and Mary. Funeral services will be held at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 8, 2018 with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro with military honors afforded by the U.S. Air Force and the Caro American Legion Post #7. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 10:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro Garden Club.
