Joy E. LaFave of Caro, age 90, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday July 12, 2016 at the Tuscola Country Medical Care Community in Caro. Joy was born March 11, 1926 in Gagetown, the daughter of the late Edward and Elizabeth (Helmbold) Fischer, and was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County. On June 19, 1947, she was united in marriage with Patrick LaFave at St. Agatha's Parish in Gagetown, and he preceded her in death on December 27, 1994 after forty-six years of marriage. Joy was a Gagetown High School graduate and attended Central Michigan University. She worked as an assistant librarian at the Indianfields Township Library for thirteen years, and for seventeen years, served as a secretary to the Tuscola County District Court Probation Officer. She was a longtime and active member of the Caro United Methodist Church, volunteering for vacation bible school, helping with church dinners, making and sending monthly cards to the sick and shut-ins, as well as sewing dresses for Haitian girls. She could always be counted on to help the Caro Knights of Columbus with dinners and boxing pumpkin pies. Joy enjoyed volunteering at the elementary school tutoring children in reading. Spending time playing games as well as participating in activities with the residents at the Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center also gave her great joy. She volunteered for several years as a green side scorekeeper on the PGA Tour at the Bob Hope Classic in Palm Springs and the Buick Open in Grand Blanc. Joy is survived by one daughter and son, Jill LaFave of Rochester Hills and Randy & Sue LaFave of Caro; a brother, Ted (Dee) Fischer of Atlanta, MI; a half-brother, Dick Fischer of Ashville, NC; two step-grandsons, Scott & Crysty Frick of Tucson, Arizona, Kyle & Michele Frick of Caro; two step-great-grandchildren, Ella and Quinton; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. The family is deeply grateful to Joy's very, very special friends at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community, especially Brenda Kirk, who cared for our mother on a daily basis for so many years. And to Carolyn Graff for her devotion and commitment to Mom. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 at the Caro United Methodist Church with Pastor Tony Tomasino officiating.
