Kenneth Gainforth of Unionville, age 86, passed away on Sunday, September 22, 2024 at his home after a courageous eleven-month battle with mesothelioma. Ken was born September 14, 1938 in Pigeon, the son of the late Milford and Theresa (Prutchick) Gainforth. He graduated high school in 1956 and worked a few different jobs before joining the United States Air Force until 1962. While stationed at Lockbourne Air Force Base in Columbus, Ken happened to meet the former Frances R. Gruber. They were married on June 2, 1962, sharing sixty-two years of marriage, three wonderful children, and countless memories. Ken loved to take trips on his motorcycle with Frances and proudly rode his motorcycle in all forty-eight continental states. He owned several motorcycles, with one Silver Wing cycle having over 265,000 miles on it.
Ken is survived by his wife, Frances Gainforth; three children, Greg Gainforth, William (Linda) Gainforth, and Heidi Marie Fin Frock; grandchildren, Melanie (Seth), Michael (Maggie), Nathan (Cathy), Sidney, Charity, Anthony (Jeanette), Wesley; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Eva Jean (Daniel) Herman; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Ken was preceded in death by his grandson, Greg Gainforth II.
In keeping with Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2024 at the Vassar Victory Center, 800 State Street, Vassar, MI 48768. Rev. Mark Seppo will officiate. Military honors will be afforded by the U.S. Air Force and Caro American Legion Post # 7. The family will be present to receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. until the time of his service at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment will take place on Tuesday, October 15, 2024 at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly at 2:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Vassar Victory Center or the Tunnels to Towers Foundation.
