Kenneth J. Martin, age 76 years, of Cass City, passed away on Friday, November 14, 2008 at his home. He was born on August 9, 1932 in Cass City to the late Claude and Mary (Hartsell) Martin. Ken was a 1950 Cass City High School graduate and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Upon his return, he went to work at Saginaw Steering Gear from 1956 until 1971. Ken Martin and the former Carolyn Bernethy were married on September 22, 1956 in Saginaw. She preceded him in death on September 13, 1994. He then married Joann (Reed) Brown on October 14, 1995 in Cass City, and she survives him. In July of 1970, Ken established Ken Martin Electric Inc. and retired from that occupation in 1999. He was a thirty-four year member and past president of the Cass City Lions Club, and a past president, elder and usher at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cass City. For years he was a Little League coach and an avid sports fan. Ken loved to play cards, dance, putter around the shop and garden, and enjoyed his childrens and grandchildrens activities. He loved to share a good joke with everyone he knew. He is survived by his wife, Joann; one daughter and one son, Cheri L. Martin of Columbia, Missouri and Kenneth Martin, Jr. and his wife, Roselyn, of Cass City; three grandchildren, Andrew, Emily and Erika Martin; one sister, Marie Bierlein of Saginaw; his in-laws, Jean Martin of Bad Axe, Al (Maxine) Bernethy of Saginaw, Marcella Bernethy of Montana and Keith and Gladys Phelps of Suttons Bay; Joanns children, Bruce (Sharon) Brown of Beaverton, Susan Brown of Niles, Sara (Chris) Depoy of Grand Rapids, Paul (Rochelle) Brown of Cass City, Barry (Kerry) Brown of Caro; his step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Bertha Ashmore, Evelyn Miksa, Isabelle Wright, Gerry Bullock, Roy Martin and Pete Martin; and one brother-in-law, William Bernethy. The funeral service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Cass City on Monday, November 17, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Gerald Meyer officiating. Burial will be at Elkland Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Cass City Lions Club, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, or the Cass City Athletic Boosters Club.
