Kenneth A. Schember age 87, of Elkton died Sunday morning, October 16, at Covenant Cooper in Saginaw.
He was born February 5, 1924 at the home of his parents the late Alford and Lydia (Staehli) Schember in Oliver Twp.
Ken served in the US Army in post war Italy, getting his discharge in June of 1947.
On April 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Lois Bailey, they farmed and made their home in Oliver Twp. She preceded him in death, March 19, 1967.
Ken retired from farming in 1975 and went to work for Baby and Teen World in Detroit until 1983. That year he married Lucille (Grigg) Thompson on August 13, at the Elkton United Methodist Church, they made their home in Elkton.
He was a member of the Elkton Missionary Church, wife a member of the United Methodist, so they attended both. Ken delivered Meals on Wheels for 17 years, but didn’t just drop off the meal, he would take out their trash, change a light bulb or just visit for a while. He enjoyed making wood crafts and gave them mostly to his family and friends with whom he loved to joke and visit.
Surviving are his wife, Lucille; two children, Roger (Kathy) Schember of Ruby, NC and Laura (Matt) Reilly of Elkton; two step children, Peggy (Jim) Champagne of Elkton and Todd (Mary) Thompson of Essexville; ten grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; seven brothers, Clarence (Kate) Schember of Cass City, Earl (Doris) Schember of Gagetown, Robert Schember of Elkton, Jerry (Jane) Schember of Goodells, Ed Schember of Elkton and Wayne Schember of Pigeon and his sister, Alene McCracken of Bad Axe. Preceding him in death was a son, Richard; two brothers, Walter and Olin Schember and a sister, Evelyn Haley.
Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 A M Tuesday, October 18, at the Elkton Missionary Church. Rev. Reggie Courless, pastor will officiate with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Elkton.
Friends may call at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton from 2 to 8 PM Monday and at the church after 10 Tuesday morning.
Memorials may be direct to the Elkton Missionary Church or McNally House (it’s a place near the hospitals in Saginaw where families may stay)
