Larry Mccollum

Larry McCollum, age 76, passed away Monday, September 2, 2019 following a lingering illness. He was born in Unionville on December 21, 1942, the son of the late Sarah and Calvin Murray McCollum. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. He spent his working career as a lift truck operator at Eaton/Grede Foundry in Vassar. He enjoyed working in the woods and was happiest with a chainsaw in his hands. For many years he looked forward to the beginning of deer season. He stopped hunting after he began putting out corn for the herd. The deer became so tame that they came when he called them, and would continue to feed even with him standing just a few yards away. After that, he just didn't have the heart to shoot them. For more than 50 years he enjoyed playing euchre as part of a couples' card club. He was a life member of the Tuscola County Conservation Club, and served as a past president. He was an enthusiastic and accomplished skeet shooter, and enjoyed mentoring others new to the sport. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 54 years, Kay McCollum of Cass City; two sons, Ron (Evelyn) McCollum of Caro, Randy (Jessica) McCollum of Clawson; brother, Dale (Nancy) McCollum of Caro; sister, Betty Kinney of Millington; grandson, Alex, and a new grandson due in November. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by half-siblings, William Healy, Merle McCollum, Zelda McCrea, and Lucille Schriber. In keeping with Larry's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private memorial gathering has been held. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association. It is our prayer that scientists may someday soon discover a cure for this devastatingly cruel disease.
