Lawrence D. "Larry" Kretzschmer, age 69 of Pigeon, passed away Thursday, October 11, 2012 at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Larry was born on the family farm in Owendale on October 5, 1943 and was the son of the late Rolla and Carol Melba (Rapson) Kretzschmer. He graduated from OwenGage High School in 1961, then served with the U.S. Navy from 1961-1963 on the U.S.S. Orion in Norfolk, Virginia. Following his discharge from the Navy, on August 29, 1963 he was united in marriage to Joyce E. Jarvis at St. John's Lutheran Church, Berne. Larry then attended trade school and went to work for General Motors. He later attended Detroit College of Business where he received his B.S. degree, and where he taught after receiving his Masters Degree from Central Michigan University in 1993. He worked at Flint Engine North for 36 years, and retired from GM Romulus Engine Plant in 2005 after working at GM for 40 years and one day.
Larry loved fly fishing. In Flint, he coached two Little League championship teams as well as a consolation team. He enjoyed playing softball for as long as he could. He enjoyed traveling, especially to Texas for the past five years. He spent more than four years rebuilding the Jarvis Family home in Pigeon, where he and Joyce have made their home. Larry loved his family dearly, especially his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Joyce, he is survived by three children, Lori Kay (Larry) Morse of Davison, Kevin Lee (Jeannine) Kretzschmer of Howell and Larry Keith (Becki) Kretzschmer of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren: Jyles, Amanda, Victoria, Katie, Jacob, Taylor, Nicole, Robyn, Alex, and Mariel; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kay Adams of Coral Springs, Florida, Ruth (Dick) Dunn of Kenton, and Dana Martin of Fort Lauderdale, Florida; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Rolla James Kretzschmer.
The Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Pigeon, with Rev. James A. Gorsegner, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
