Lawrence G. Romain

Lawrence G. Romain of Caro, age 81, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 24, 2020. Larry was born February 4, 1939, the son of the late Lawrence & Mary Helen (Weis) Romain and graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1957. Shortly after, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served on the destroyer USS Ingersoll (DD-652) until his honorable discharge in 1960. Larry was united in marriage with the former Sandra Storm in 1963 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Caro and the couple was blessed with three children, Lance, Dawn, and Shane. He worked for several years at Skidmore's Marathon Gas Station in Caro and later as an insurance agent for Farm Bureau in Cass City and State Farm in Lapeer. He later took an assembly position at GM Truck and Bus in Flint before opening a grocery store in Fostoria, Romain's Market, which was a true family operation. In 1979, in search of better weather and a change of scenery, Larry moved to California. While there, he worked for Skunk Works in Van Nuys in the F-115 Stealth Fighter Jet assembly program. He retired as a self-employed home builder in California and returned to Caro to enjoy retirement in 2014. In Larry's earlier years, he was a member of the Caro Jaycees and the Lapeer Optimist Club. He enjoyed hunting and was a faithful annual attendee of the family deer camp where he enjoyed the male bonding that inevitably ensued. He was also an original incorporator of the CED Corporation, a collection of eighteen families, each skilled in different trades, that built a family vacation home in West Branch where countless memories were made. Larry will be remembered as a lifelong learner and avid reader. He had discerning taste and collected many fine things that included Asian art, clowns, Oscar winning movies, and treasures from a lifetime of travel. He also had a love of cars and especially enjoyed restoring his prized 1955 Hudson Rambler. He was an avid family man and will be missed deeply. Larry is survived by three children, Lance & Lourdes Romain of Macomb, Dawn Cloutier of Fraser, Shane Romain of Caro; eight grandchildren, Ashley Cloutier, Bob & Priscilla Cloutier, Amanda Romain, Nicole Romain, Logen Romain, Megan Romain, Makaela Cloutier, Nikolas Cloutier; three great-grandchildren, Rylie, Alvin and Emberlyn; siblings, Helen & Dwaine Peters, Mary Jo & Robert Ward, Clyde & Connie Romain, Tom & Betsy Romain; sisters-in-law, Diane Romain and Katherine Romain; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
