Leasly “Les” F. Schaper, 59, of Caseville, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, March 2, 2023 after a two and a half year battle with glioblastoma (brain cancer).
Les was born February 4, 1964 in Pigeon to the late William II and Betty (Ronan) Schaper. In 1983 he graduated from Laker High School where he was part of the State Champion Football Team. He married Tracy Elenbaum on April 13, 1985 in Pigeon.
Les was very proud to be a father and farmer. He was a member of the Pork Producers Association, Michigan Sugar Company, Pigeon Cooperative Elevator, Farm Bureau, and Bay Port State Bank Board of Directors. Les was an active lifelong member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Linkville where he served in various offices. When not farming he enjoyed NASCAR, riding his Harley-Davidson and spending winters in Florida.
Les is survived by his wife of 37 years Tracy; children Megan of Ann Arbor and Mitchell (Katie Bushey) of Pigeon; sisters Debra Englehart of Cass City, Diane (Jerry) Wildman of Sebewaing, Marge (Harold) Weisenbach of Sebewaing, and Sandy (Tim) Samczyk of Pigeon; brother Bill of Pigeon; sisters-in-law Tammy (Corky) Dawes of Tennessee and Terry Gruehn of Sebewaing; brother-in-law Todd Elenbaum of Pigeon; mother-in-law Marge Elenbaum of Sebewaing; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Jeannette and Mary Schaper, father-in-law Sherl “Jake” Elenbaum, brothers-in-law Doug Englehart and Mark Gruehn.
Funeral services will be 11:00am Tuesday, March 7th at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Linkville with Rev. Chris Suggitt officiating. Burial will be in Grand Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8pm Monday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel and one hour prior to the service in church on Tuesday.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, A.B.A.T.E. (American Bikers Aiming Towards Education of Michigan), or American Cancer Society (for brain cancer research).
