Leo L. Campbell of Caro, age 92, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at St. Marys of Michigan in Saginaw. He was born May 15, 1920 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of the late George and Jane Lillie (Velvick) Campbell. He came to the Gilford and Caro area with his family in 1927 and has lived there since. Leo was united in marriage with the former Leatrice Haines on June 21, 1941 in Caro, and they have cherished more than seventy years of marriage together. Leo has owned and operated a farm near Gilford nearly his entire life, as well as been employed full time with the Eaton, Yale and Townson Foundry in Vassar for thirty-four years, retiring in 1974. Leo was a member of the Gilford United Methodist Church until it closed, then attended the Caro United Methodist Church. He enjoyed hunting, was a member of the Vassar Eagles, a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and was past president of Fairgrove Senior Citizens Club. Leo is survived by his wife, Leatrice Campbell of Caro; three children, Dale & Gail Campbell of Vassar, Bruce & Mary Lou Campbell of Lansing, Nancy & Dale McCollum of Caro; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, State Trooper Leo Campbell, Jr. and Dennis Campbell; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and sixteen brothers and sisters, Leda May, Franklin Patrick, Harold Sam, Eugene B., Stephen Robert, Evelyn, Alta Rose, John Charles, Peter Albert, Donald Oscar, Ernest Dewit, Pheobe Evelyn, Ronnie Douglas, Roland, Clifford George, Loretta Lucille. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at the Caro United Methodist Church with Rev. Gregg Mayberry officiating. Burial will follow at the Gilford Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro United Methodist Church.
