Leona F. Binder, age 83, passed away Saturday, February 16, 2008 at her home, following a lingering illness. She was born September 13, 1924 in Caro, the daughter of the late Irvin Fay (Capling) Binder, and was a lifelong area resident. Leona was employed for forty-three years as a secretary and bookkeeper for the Tuscola County Road Commission, retiring in 1989. She was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church in Caro and continued her membership as it became the Caro United Methodist Church in the early 1970s. Leona taught Sunday school for over thirty years and loved being surrounded by children. She was a life-member of the Caro VFW Post #4164 Auxiliary and was involved in many of its activities. Leona treasured spending time with her nieces and nephews, and had a heart of gold when it came to helping people. She enjoyed ceramic, porcelain and china painting, traveling and playing the piano by ear. Leona is survived by two brothers and their spouses, Rex Margaret Binder of Caro, Wayne Shirley Binder of Caro; twelve nieces, nephews and their spouses, Lester “Skip” Lue Binder of Chicago, Mark Nancy Binder of Caro, Peggy Binder of St. Clair Shores, Suzie Novak of Seattle, Washington, Marion Binder of Caro, Lois Binder of Saginaw, Ruth Darwin Heme of Grand Ledge, Fred Chris Binder of Caro, Deanna Schneider of Caro, Greg Susan Binder of Cleveland, Ohio, Connie Bill Hall of Grand Rapids, Allen Binder of Los Angeles, California; twelve great-nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Vivian Binder of Caro. In addition to her parents, Leona was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Binder in 1998, sister-in-law, Dorothy Binder in 2006, and a cousin and special friend, Joan Quirk in 2008.
