Leonard C. Hellman, age 80, of Caseville, died Sunday, April 24, 2005 at Huron County Medical Care Facility in Bad Axe of heart failure.
Leonard was born November 4, 1924 in Bessemer, Michigan to the late Victor and Mae (Holappa) Hellman. He attended Bessemer Schools until moving to Detroit and working at Vickers. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII and spent 8 months as a prisoner of war being held by the Germans. He was awarded a Silver Star for his time in the service.
After the war Leonard returned home and married Shirley A. Liljegren on June 22, 1946 in Detroit. They moved to Royal Oak and raised a family there while Leonard worked for Michigan Bell, eventually retiring in 1982. Upon retirement, Leonard moved permanently to Caseville. He was a Past President of the Caseville Eagles, a life member of the Sebewaing VFW and the Royal Oak Elks, and a member of the Port Austin American Legion and Caro Moose Lodge.
Leonard is survived by his wife Shirley; son Randall and his wife Beverly of Denver, Colorado and daughter Ruthann McGill of Caseville; and grandsons Mark Hellman of Denver, Scott McGill of Oxford and Matthew McGill and his friend Janine of Grand Blanc.
He was preceded in death by his sister Margorie and step-sisters Faith and Joy.
A memorial service will take place at 12:00 Noon Thursday, April 28th at the Champagne Funeral Chapel of Caseville, followed by military honors provided by the Sebewaing VFW. Friends are welcome to begin gathering at the funeral home beginning at 11:00 AM.
