Lester J. Weidman, age 87, of Caseville, longtime Chandler Twp dairy farmer, passed away, Saturday evening, January 2, at McLaren Bay Regional Medical Center.

He was born February 28, 1928 in Oliver Twp., one of eleven children born to Alfred and Elizabeth (Staehli) Weidman. He attended Elkton School and graduated with a GED. He left Huron County and moved to Detroit, taking a job with DeVlieg Machine Company in Royal Oak.

On June 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Donna J. Hunt in Detroit. A short time later, he was called to serve in the US Army and was sent to Korea.

Les left his job in Ferndale in 1971 and returned to Chandler Twp., where he became a dairy farmer. After retiring from the farm, he worked part-time for Gascho Furniture and Lee’s Landscaping.

Les had been a very active member of his church, Redford Free Methodist, in Detroit, while there and on his return at the Elkton Missionary Church, where he served as a trustee, deacon, sang with the church quartet, leading the cadets and teaching Sunday school. He was also a member of the Aim High Farm Bureau Group and Elkton VFW.
Les loved to play softball, first as a player and later as a coach. He loved the Detroit Tigers. He supported the Laker High School sports teams. His true passion was watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, music and drama.

Surviving are his wife, Donna; four sons, Mark (Kathi) Weidman of Caseville, Michael (Amy) Weidman of Vancouver, BC, John (Jacky) Weidman of Southfield and James (Dawn) Weidman of Concord; ten grandchildren, Jessica (Nick), Daniel, Hans, Hannah, Jocelyn, Jennifer, Johnny, Joanna, Zachary and Bethany; three great grandchildren, Sadie, Lucy and Henry; siblings, Herb (Ellen) Weidman of Sterling Hts., Don (Kay) Weidman and Gary (Debbie) Weidman both of Saginaw, Eunice Tripp of Sterling Hts, Bernadine (Ken) Thompson of Utica and Sabina (Ken) Johnston of Los Gatos, CA and sisters-in-law, Shirley Weidman of Elkton and Pauline Findlay of Caro.

Preceding him in death were brothers, Orville and Cliff Weidman; sisters, Mary Reibling and Donna Burk; and step sister, Muriel Smith.

Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 PM Thursday, January 7, at the Elkton Missionary Church. Rev. Reggie Courless, pastor will officiate with burial in Chandler Twp. Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel, Elkton and after 12 noon at the church Thursday.
