Lewis Sayers of Caro, age 68, passed away on Monday, November 22, 2021 as the result of injuries sustained in a farming accident. Lew was born May 18, 1953 in Caro, the son of the late Howard & Louise (Bundesen) Sayers. He was raised on the family farm where he resided still, and graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1971 and Delta College in 1974. Lew was united in marriage with the former Joan Vermilya on June 7, 1975 in Caro, and she preceded him in death on July 16, 2017. He spent over thirty years serving as a custodian for Caro Community Schools, retiring in 2010. He was also a lifelong farmer and self-described tinkerer. Lew has been described as the Michelangelo of duct tape and bailing wire. Nothing ever went to waste, and although his list of chores was long, they were almost always projects done in service to others. Lew surrounded himself with an obscene number of bulletin boards and researched a myriad of topics thoroughly, including the history of Christianity. His palate was undiscerning, and he enjoyed a host of strange combinations of foods, almost always with black beans as a staple ingredient. Lew possessed a deep love of animals and didn't believe in hunting, but was willing to waiver in his moral stance when it came to the moles in his yard. His pants were short, his songs were offkey, and his intentions were kind. Lew's happiness came from helping others and being with family. When he played with his grandchildren, he played with his whole heart as if he was one of the kids. Lew was a member of the Caro First Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and served on the Toolbox Ministry. He was also very active with the Tuscola County House of Hope, a new men's homeless shelter in Caro. Lew believed in hard work, independence, and that nothing was truly clean unless it was bleached. His quirks, mechanical talents, and fashion sense will be missed deeply by countless in this community. Lew is survived by three children and their spouses, John & Melanie Sayers of Rixeyville, Virginia, Mandy & Nate Jickling of Caro, Christine Sayers of Lansing; seven grandchildren, Gwen, Garret, Emberli, Elyse, Jacqueline, Ava, Mckenna; siblings, Karen Sayers, Kent (Ethel) Sayers, Richard "Dick" Sayers; and many nieces and nephews.
