Lillian Vera Kennedy, age 89, of Caro died on Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Hills & Dales General Hospital in Cass City. She was born on June 17, 1921 in Cass City to the late Neil and Elizabeth (Copland) Fletcher. Lillian lived most of her life in Tuscola County. She graduated from Cass City High School in 1938. She was a hard worker while living in Cass City. In 1940 she moved to Detroit with friends. Eventually she was employed as a “Rosy the Riveter” in Detroit. In the fall of 1945 she returned to the area and worked at a grocery store in Colling and later the Clark Canning Company. The former Lillian Fletcher was united in marriage to Arthur S. Kennedy on January 16, 1946 at Cass City. He preceded her in death on December 6, 1972 in Caro. In 1967 she was one of the first employees of the Sears Catalogue Store in Caro, where she stayed until 1976. She owned a gas station at Hooper and State until she sold it. In addition to her many years of employment, she was a wife, mother, and homemaker. She retired to enjoy her hobbies. She is survived by five of her children, Gary (Lori) Kennedy of Caro, Laurel (Scott) Clark of Caro, Arlan (Vickie) Kennedy of Caro, Valerie Humes, and Peggy Kennedy of Caro; one daughter-in-law, Lynne Kennedy of Las Vegas, Nevada; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Childs of Caro; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Arthur Kennedy Jr. on June 7, 1949 and Charles Walter Kennedy on December 6, 1993; a son-in-law, Terry Humes on August 24, 2006; three grandchildren, Jill Moyer in 1973, LynLeigh Kennedy in 1991, and Rocky Clark in 1996; a sister, Mary Merchant on January 12, 1968; and two brothers-in-law, Charles Merchant and Leon Childs. The funeral service will be held at the Caro United Methodist Church on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Jerry Smith officiating. Burial will be at Elkland Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Collon Funeral Home on Monday, May 9, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and at the Caro United Methodist Church on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the charity of the donors choice.
