Lydia Gettel

Lydia Gettel, age 86 years, of Caro, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2007 at Caro Community Hospital. The former Amelia Lydia Witzke was born in Unionville to the late Frederick and Teofilge (Henkel) Witzke and was a lifelong resident of Tuscola County. Lydia married Vern Norman Gettel on December 13, 1941 in Bach. He preceded her in death in 1966. She was employed as a dietary cook at the Caro Regional Center until her retirement. Lydia was a member of the S.E.R.A. Club and St. Paul Lutheran Church of Caro. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and Ladies Aid projects at the church. She is survived by three sons and two daughters, Vern Richard “Dick” Gettel and Rita Whalen of Caro, Larry (Betty) Gettel of Caro, Betty Jean Hiner of Lapeer, Daniel (Mary) Gettel of Caro and June Marie Patterson of Vassar; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale (Ruth) Witzke of Bad Axe; one sister, Martha Pauline Wieldman of Gagetown and several nieces and nephews. Lydia was preceded in death by two daughters, Gloria Jane Gettel and Doris Lynn Nordstrom; one grandson, Jeremy Hiner; and her remaining siblings, Elsie Bohn, Arnold Witzke and Rudolph Witzke. The funeral will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro on Monday, October 8, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Cameron Steele officiating. Burial will be at Indianfields Township Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Collon Funeral Home on Sunday from 5:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
