Margaret J. Montei of Caro, age 95, passed away on Monday, March 8, 2021 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro. Margaret was born September 28, 1925 in Quanicassee, the daughter of the late Rex & Verna (Mauger) Griffin. She was a lifelong area resident and graduated from Caro High School with the class of 1944. Prior to her graduation, Margaret was united in marriage with the former Paul Montei on October 21, 1943, and the couple celebrated sixty-four years together before his death on December 7, 2007. While in high school, Margaret worked for Trudeau's Bakery in Caro, followed by brief employment at the Caro Regional Center while Paul was stationed overseas at the end of World War II. She continued her education at Michigan State College in a short course for women in agriculture and spent the majority of her working years as a partner to Paul on the family farm. Later in her career, she also worked for the Tuscola County Controllers Office. Margaret leaves behind a legacy of adventure and unmatched cooking ability. She became a licensed pilot in 1961 and flew across much of the United States with Paul and was proud to have been crowned the International Flying Farmer Queen. She enjoyed dancing, entertaining, spending time at the family cottage, and cooking for family and friends. Margaret was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church and its Methodist Women, the Fairgrove VFW Auxiliary, and the Bay City Elks. Left to cherish her memory are two sons and their spouses, Dennis & Barbara Montei of Caro, Monte & Sue Montei of Fairgrove; daughter-in-law, Deonna Montei of Caro; six grandchildren and their spouses, Heather Montei of Gaylord, Nicholas & Peggy Montei of Caro, Katherine Montei of Lake Orion, Charles & Carolyn Montei of Holt, Maggie & Chad Justice of Deford, and Matthew Montei of Unionville; nine great-grandchildren, Landen, Zoe, Griffin, Averie, Sawyer, Isla, Dawson, Lane, and Louie. In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was preceded in death by two children, Paula Jo Montei and Randy Montei; five siblings and their spouses. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 12, 2021 at the Caro United Methodist Church with Rev. Michele Hile officiating. Burial will follow at Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove. The family will be present to receive friends at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the Caro United Methodist Church or the Fairgrove District Library.
