Maria Abuyuan Guzman

Maria Abuyuan Guzman of Caro, age 78, passed away Friday, February 22, 2019 at St. Mary's Ascension Hospital in Saginaw with her loving family by her side. Maria was born July 22, 1940 in Ilagan, Isabela, Philippines, where she was raised and graduated from Catholic High School. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila and worked for a short time in the Philippines following her graduation. Maria continued her studies at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota for two years before returning to the Philippines, but part of her heart remained in the United States. She was united in marriage with Vic Guzman on October 10, 1966 in Quezon City, Philippines and had three of her five children while living there. She returned to the United States with her family in 1972 when she accepted a position with Caro Community Hospital as a nursing supervisor. After seven years of service to the hospital, she began a career at the Caro Regional Center, first as a head nurse and retiring as a building supervisor in 2002. Following her retirement, Maria continued to work part-time as an operating room nurse at Caro Community Hospital until only a few months ago. She was a member of St. Christopher Parish in Caro and its Christian Services organization. Maria loved to shop, garden, cook, dance, and travel the world. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Maria is survived by her husband of fifty-two years, Vic Guzman of Caro; five children and their spouses, Marirose & John Ilkka of Royal Oak, Alvin Guzman of Caro, Marijo & Scott Vollmar of Florence, Oregon, Michelle & Jim Turner of Traverse City, Andrew & Kyle Guzman-Sutton of Chicago; nine grandchildren, Nicholas, Samuel, and Joshua Ilkka, Luke, Nyah, Jonah, and Simone Vollmar, Jade and James Turner; eight siblings, Cecelia A. Ortanez, Junelina A. Carreon, Teodora P. Abuyuan, Jose P. Abuyuan, Jr., Silvestre P. Abuyuan, Juanito P. Abuyuan, Valentino P. Abuyuan, Anthony P. Abuyuan; and many nieces and nephews. Maria was preceded in death by her parents, Jose & Rita (Prudencio) Abuyuan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church, in Caro with Rev. Jerzy Dobosz officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. when the Holy Rosary will be prayed.
