Maria De La Luz Vela

Maria De La Luz (Torres) Vela of Caro, age 90, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at Covenant Health Care - Cooper in Saginaw, following a period of declining health. She was born August 19, 1925 in Mission, Texas, the daughter of the late Telesforo & Manuela (Cardenes) Torres. Mary's best friend, Beatriz (Vella) Bustamante, introduced Mary to her brother, Roberto Vela, sparking a teenage romance that would last over seventy years. Maria and Roberto were united in marriage on May 2, 1944 in Mission, Texas, and he survives her. Mary understood hard work and spent most of her life as a laborer. She loved her family deeply and was always happiest when cooking for them. She also enjoyed singing and dancing. In addition to her husband, Mary is survived by nine children; twenty-seven grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro. Burial will follow at the Almer Township Cemetery in Caro.
