Marilyn Ruth Sylvester of Caro, age 78, a devoted child of God, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 19, 2023, following a lengthy illness. She was born September 14, 1945, in Pigeon, the daughter of the late Clare and Lena Volz. She went on to marry George Sylvester and he preceded her in death. Marilyn enjoyed sewing, creating handmade greeting cards and floral arrangements, gardening, canning, hunting and soap operas. She was especially fond of Dark Shadows’ character, Barnabus Collins. Marilyn often chose red, white and blue in her clothing and decorating to express her patriotism. She deeply loved her daughter and grandchildren.
Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Marlene (Stephen) Forbes; two granddaughters, Megan (S. Matthew) Franklin, and Kendra Walker, all of Caro. She proudly referred to herself as “Grandma the Great” to Madalyn and Emma Franklin. Marilyn is also survived by two brothers, Wallace Volz and Dale (Lisa) Volz of Sebewaing. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Clare; and brother, Melvin Volz; as well as Melvin Spencer, her partner of twenty-six years.
A graveside service for family and friends will take place on Friday, November 24, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ellington Township Cemetery with Rev. Cameron Steele officiating. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Caro.
