Martha Kern

Martha Carolyn (Turner) Kern, formerly of Caro, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017 in Edgewood, Kentucky. She was born February 11, 1931 in May's Lick, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Frank L. and Julia (Brammer) Turner. Martha graduated from May's Lick High School in 1949, Fugazzi School of Business in May of 1950, and obtained her bachelor's degree in home economics from the University of Kentucky in May of 1955. She was hired by Vassar Public Schools as a home economics teacher, and was later employed by Caro Community Schools. On July 12, 1958, Martha was united in marriage with the late Richard F. Kern of Caro. In the 1980's, Martha was employed as the first WIC Director for Tuscola County where she was responsible for building the program allowing her to help mothers and children. She was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church serving in many capacities including Sunday school teacher, junior choir director, Stephen Minister, long time choir member, event planner for the JOY group, member of LWML, and a member of the quilter's group. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and served as a board member for the Caro Arts Society. Martha was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed golfing, square dancing, bridge, sewing, traveling and entertaining. Martha is survived by two daughters, Kristin Kern-Spiekerman and her husband, Rick, of Cincinnati, Ohio, Janine Jansson and her husband, Scott, of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren, Glen and Julia Spiekerman, Aaron and Andy Jansson; one sister, Judy Strauser and her husband, David, of Indianapolis, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband, the Honorable Richard F. Kern; brother, Robert Turner; and sister, Frances Jacobs. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 27, 2017 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro with Rev. Cameron Steele officiating. Entombment will follow at the Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the church on Monday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 2:00 p.m. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contributions to the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Caro.
