Mary Anne Gettel

Mary Anne Gettel of Bad Axe, formerly of Caseville, age 86, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at Courtney Manor in Bad Axe. Mary Anne was born on July 22, 1940, in Monroe, Michigan, to the late Brouwer and Jane (Mitchell) McIntyre and was a 1958 graduate of Monroe High School. She attended Hillsdale College for a year before transferring to Central Michigan University where she studied Education. Her plans would be interrupted by true love when she met John Jacob Gettel III. The pair would marry on January 31, 1961, and raise a beloved and extended family whom she greatly cherished. He preceded her in death on March 2, 2015. In her free time, Mary Anne enjoyed the simple things in life, like gardening and watching a beautiful Lake Huron sunset. She was often described as the life of the party and was known for hosting on any occasion she could gather her friends and family together, especially if she could play games like Scrabble and Cribbage with them. It also cannot be understated how much Mary Anne loved shopping! Her family was most important to her, though, and her love and commitment to her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews will never be forgotten.

Mary Anne is survived by her sons, John “Jay” (Kym) Gettel IV, Andy (Nicki) Gettel, and Charlie Gettel; grandchildren, Nicole Gettel, John Gettel V, Sean Gettel, Hannah (Kyle) LaVake, Andrew (Lauren) Gettel, Curtis Gettel, Emily Gettel, Jacob Gettel, James Tipton, Benjamin Tipton, Victoria Taylor, Dalton Gettel, and Alyssa Gettel; six great grandchildren; and sisters, Marge Hohman and Lydia Barnes; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

In addition to her beloved husband John, Mary Anne was preceded in death by her daughter, Jane Gettel, and brothers, Charles McIntyre III and John McIntyre.

In accordance with Mary Anne’s wishes, cremation is to take place. The family is planning a celebration of life for June of 2027. Memorial contributions may be made to the Thumb Animal Shelter, 2260 South Elkton Road, Elkton, MI 48731, or the Arbor Day Foundation.
