Mary Ann Knowlton

Mary Ann Knowlton of Caro, age 94, passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2023 at Tuscola County Medical Care Community. She was born October 18, 1928 in Pontiac, the daughter of the late Sherwood and Nora (Klockow) Nye. Mary Ann graduated from Pontiac High School and went on to continue her education at Hillsdale College, earning a degree in teaching. She met the love of her life, Charles Knowlton in high school and were united in marriage on August 19, 1950. They enjoyed sixty-three years of marriage, two wonderful sons, and countless memories. The couple moved to Caro in 1967 due to Chuck's job at Detroit Edison. Mary Ann taught Kindergarten in the "Annex" at Schall Elementary School, which she always called "The Chicken Coops!" Along with her teaching portion, she was very busy helping her husband renovate a 118-year-old farmhouse in Watrousville where they lived for several years. She loved antiques, enjoyed collecting them and the stories behind them. Mary Ann quit teaching to follow Chuck's job to Marysville. While there, they enjoyed time spent at their cottage at Island Lake. Mary Ann & Chuck eventually moved to Island Lake where they enjoyed family visits and spending time with dear friends. In 2002, they built a home in Caro and moved back to be close to family. Mary Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandma, and great-grandma. She loved her family and had a special place in her heart for the many dogs she raised over the years. Mary Ann will be missed dearly. Mary Ann leaves to cherish her memory her sons and their spouses, Thomas & Laurie Knowlton of Medina, Ohio and Richard & Carla Knowlton of Caro; four grandchildren and their spouses, Charlotte Motz of Louisville, Kentucky, Kelsey & Giorgio Gonzalez of Strongsville, Ohio, Christopher & Lauren Knowlton of Grand Rapids, and Heather & Nicholas Lazzaro of Lakehills, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Gwenyth and Thomas Motz, Ava, Farra, and Jaxon Gonzalez, and Kora Lazzaro. In addition to her parents, Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband. In keeping with Mary Ann's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorial contributions to Great Start Tuscola Imagination Library, c/o Rachel Koepf, 1401 Cleaver Road, Caro, Michigan 48723.
