Mary Smith

Mary E. Smith, age 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 8, 2007 at Caro Community Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born October 4, 1916 in Elmwood Township, the daughter of the late William Susanna (Dettweiler) Smith. Mary graduated from Caro High School in 1933 and then worked as a clerical assistant under the County Agricultural Agent with the Tuscola County Court House from 1934 to 1942. She married Clifford R. Smith on June 6, 1936 in Melvin, MI. He preceded her in death on January 28, 1991. Mary was an active member of the Colwood United Brethren in Christ Church and a member of the Womens Missionary Fellowship. She enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting and Swedish weaving. She is survived by four sons and their spouses, James Smith of Caro, Gerald Nancy Smith of Huntington, IN, Clifford Helen Smith, Jr. of Gaylord, Gary Louise Smith of Unionville; three daughters and their spouses, Eloise Dorland Kuntz of Caro, Eileen Lee Rhodes of Wheeler, Linda Tom Krause of Caro; sixteen grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, William Smith of Powell, TN, Fred Smith of Frankenmuth, and Donald Smith of Caro; two sisters, Rosella Lehner of Caro and Ruth Boggs of Pine Mountain, KY, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mary was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Jessica Krause and Sheryl Rhodes; one grandson, Keith Smith; two sisters, Mabel Smith and Pearl Venema; five brothers, Alvin, Elden, Roy, John and Richard.
