Matt A. Ollila of Vassar, age 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Matt was born December 14, 1941 in Caro, the son of the late Otto and Saimi (Onkala) Ollila, and proudly served his country with the U.S. Army, 1st Cavalry, from 1959 to 1962. He was united in marriage with Garnet L. Foster on June 29, 1963 at the Flint Church of the Nazarene, and she survives. Matt was employed as a heat treat operator for General Motors, retiring in 1995. He was a member of the Caro First Presbyterian Church, Millington Masonic Lodge, and the Shriners. Matt enjoyed woodworking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family and church family. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife and best friend of fifty-nine years, Garnet; two children, Matt Ollila III of Caro, Cheryl Ollila and special friend, Robert Currier, Jr., of Caro,; five grandchildren, Ashleigh (Jason) Enos, Clinton (Maddie) Hemingway, Jordan (Jenny) Hemingway, Matthew Ollila IV, and Tyler Ollila; five great-grandchildren who were special to his heart, Charleigh, Jase, Dawson, Penelope, and Kodiak; and very special niece, Ronda Benjamin. In addition to his parents, Matt was preceded in death by two brothers, Ray and Roy Ollila; and two sisters, Barbara Box and Gertie Matthews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at the Caro First Presbyterian Church with Nicholas Schmelter officiating. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service.
