Maurice A. Bushey of Caseville, age 89, died peacefully Friday, July 14, 2023, in Bad Axe.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine A. (Krzewinski) of Bay City; his brother Louis (Yvonne) of Caseville; six children: Maribeth A. of San Rafael, Matthew A. (Marybeth) of Vero Beach, Linette C. Baur (Keith) of Caro, Janice E. (Dan Glidden) of Milwaukee, Renee (Bill) Jacobson of Boston, and Brian (Stacey) of Mason; 15 grandchildren; and numerous brother and sister-in laws, nephews, nieces and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his brother Dennis (1951), his eldest son Mark A. (June 19, 2022) and his granddaughter Grace (Oct. 27, 2014).
Maurice was born to Triefly and Vera (O’Connor) Bushey on April 16, 1934, on Limerick Road, Caseville. He graduated from Elkton High School in 1952. He went into farming with his family after high school. He served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 and spent time overseas in Europe.
Maurice married Catherine A. Krzewinski on January 2, 1960, in Bay City. They rarely spent time apart during their marriage and raised their family together on Limerick Rd., Caseville. Maurice was an active, lifetime member of St. Felix Catholic Church in Pinnebog.
Together with his brother Louis, he farmed over a thousand acres of dry beans, corn, wheat and alfalfa. He also ran a large dairy farm and beef cattle operation. His family’s farm was hit by a tornado in June of 1984, destroying the barn and causing some operations to cease. In 1978, Maurice and Louis founded and ran Bushey Tiling and Seawalling, installing 60 million feet of drainage tile and thousands of feet of seawall across Michigan’s Thumb and shoreline over decades. Maurice also served on the Huron County Road Commission from 1997 to 2002.
Maurice and Catherine were proud to send all seven of their children to college and watch them graduate. He also instilled a sense of discovery in his children by leading numerous family trips across North America. Traveling by motorhome to Alaska, Florida, and the east and west coasts. His eldest granddaughter Claire has found his Army duffle bag useful for her own international travel adventures.
As a way of sharing his abundance and recognizing those less fortunate, Maurice donated tons of navy beans and meat to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen Detroit. His donations provided over a million bowls of soup over more than 40 years.
Maurice enjoyed fishing, especially with his children and grandchildren, keeping up on the news, sports events, and tending to his orchard and garden. He continued to travel with Catherine after retirement and enjoyed spending winters in California and Florida.
His legacy rests with his children and grandchildren who admire and respect his commitment to them.
