Max E. McNeil of Caro, age 96, passed away on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at the Tuscola County Medical Care Community in Caro, following a lengthy illness. He was born January 12, 1919 in Sandusky, the son of the late Henry and Edna (Liverance) Hammond and John and Ethel McNeil. Max was united in marriage with the former Mary Louise Fessler on June 17, 1939, and she preceded him in death in 1992. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1944, serving stateside and the Pacific Theater. Max was a master plumber and the former owner of Caro Plumbing Supply, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed fishing in Canada and Cedarville, snowmobiling and traveling, especially to Alaska and the Yukon Territory. He was a lifetime member and past commander of the Caro American Legion Post #7, a lifetime member of the Caro Mt. Moriah Lodge #226 F&AM, and also belonged to the Caro Moose Lodge #1049 for many years. Max is survived by two daughters, Marjorie McNeil of Reese, and Dory (Duane) Beach of Caro; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Jan McNeil of Montana; one brother-in-law, Gerrit Elzinga of Charlevoix; one sister-in-law, P. Catherine Fessler of Cadillac; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three sons, Robert, James and Philip; one granddaughter, Elizabeth; four brothers and five sisters; and a special friend, Dorothy Kovacs. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 9, 2015 at Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro, beginning with a Masonic memorial service conducted by Mt. Moriah Lodge #226 F&AM followed by Chaplain David Wilczynski. Military honors will follow under the auspices of the Caro American Legion Post #7 and the U.S. Navy. The family will be present to receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. Private interment will be held at Indianfields Township Cemetery in Caro.
