Mercedes M. Boylan of Caro, age 92, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020 at her home. Mercedes was born July 17, 1927 in Elmira, the daughter of the late Raymond and Lillian (Oswonish) Cherry and graduated from St. Mary's in Gaylord at the age of 16. Following graduation, Mercedes moved to Chicago and went to work for Philco Radio during wartime on walkie-talkie's used by soldiers. After a period of time, she went back home to work on the farm and then moved on to Detroit and worked for Michigan Bell as a secretary-clerk. Mercedes met her future husband, Patrick J. Boylan, while on vacation in Lexington. The couple were married on October 27, 1951 at Visitation Parish in Detroit and shared fifty years of marriage prior to Pat's death on October 16, 2002. She has been a resident of Caro since 1970 and worked as a school playground supervisor at Schall Elementary School in Caro for many years. Mercedes was past president of the Caro Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and loved playing Bingo, working in her flower gardens and watching the Detroit Tigers. She was always humble and kind and giving of herself to others. She will be forever missed by her loving family and friends. Left to cherish her memory are six children and their spouses, Sandra Hansen-Belfit of Midland, Patricia & Alexander Leus of Vonore, Tennessee, Daniel & Cathleen Boylan of Canton, Rick & Melanie Boylan of Kingston, Roger & Sharon Boylan of Hemlock, Doreen Oedy of Caro; her grandchildren, Kelly Hansen, Kurt & Darlene Hansen, Daniel & Julie Boylan, Kristen & Paul Schuitema, Matthew Boylan, Jacob Boylan, Alex Boylan, Trenton Boylan, Abigail Boylan, Chelsea & Brent Turk, Colton Oedy; great-grandchildren, Paul, Noah, Nokona, Piper, Cece, Joey, Daniel John, Wyatt and Lucas; three siblings, Pete Cherry and his wife, Patricia, of Gaylord, Charlotte Girard of Spring Hill, Florida, Florence Wisniewski of Sterling Heights. In addition to her parents and husband, Mercedes was preceded in death by one grandson, Patrick "PR" Hansen; and one son-in-law, Bob Belfit. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at St. Christopher Parish, Sacred Heart Church in Caro. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Caro. The family will be present to receive friends at the Ransford Collon Funeral Home in Caro on Friday from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
