Merkel Fader, age 75 years, of Caro, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at his home. He was born on October 19, 1930, in Columbia Township, and with the exception of his service time during the Korean Conflict, he was a lifelong county resident. On December 26, 1956, Merkel married the former Harriet Van Guilder in Angola, Indiana; just short of 50 years. After his service with the U.S. Navy, Merkel returned to Caro and went to work at the Caro Regional Center where he stayed for 18 years. He left to become a machine operator at Valenite Metals for 10 years until his retirement. For many years, Merkel was also a part-time marine officer and diver for the Tuscola County Sheriffs Department. Mick was a life member and past commander of Caro V.F.W. Post #4164, Vassar Eagles Aerie #2380, and Mt. Moriah Lodge #226 FAM. Merkel is survived by his wife, Harriet; one daughter, Linda and Kenneth Bragg of Mayville; one son, Fred Fader of Bay City; two step-daughters, Barbara and Bob Emery of Ocala, Florida, and Karen Craig of Munger; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law; Ruth Van Guilder of Mayville; and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Frank and Tressel Fader, preceded him in death. Cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation or services for Mr. Fader at the funeral home.
