Michael Edward Matczak

Michael E. Matczak, 81, of Port Austin, died Sunday, September 23, 2018 at Beaumont Hospital in Troy.

Mike was born June 17, 1937 in Detroit to the late Michael J. and Elsie (Bartells) Matczak.  He attended Assumption Grotto Catholic School and graduated from Detroit Denby High School in 1957; he then went on to serve in the US Army.  In 1966 he founded M.E.M. Construction and Contracting Inc, retiring in 1998.  Today the company is located in Pontiac and in its second generation, operated by his son Mark.

After retiring Mike enjoyed spending time working around his retirement home, The Pinnebog Ranch where “Life doesn’t get any better than this.”  He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his grandsons and was their #1 fan, whether cheering for the Clarkston Chiefs, the Notre Dame Prep Fighting Irish or the Caseville Eagles.  He enjoyed smoking fish, wintering in Naples, Florida and making friends wherever he went.

He is the beloved father of Alyse Kozfkay (Chad Pratt) of Port Austin and Mark Matczak (Robin Bullock) of Lapeer; the proud papa of Connor, Logan and Kaedyn Matczak, Mason, Sawyer and Landon Kozfkay and Luca and Francesco Torlai of Rome, Italy; loving eternal partner of 31 years to Joan Maywood of Troy and her son Joe (Colleen) Maywood and grandsons Michael and Sean; the mother of his children Judith (Garfield) Goulais of Whitmore Lake; dear brother of Clifford (Sue) Matczak of Port Hope, Bernadine (the late David) Marsh of Port Hope and the late Lori Roberts.

A funeral mass will be 10:00am Saturday, September 29 th at St. Michael Catholic Church in Port Austin with Fr. Craig Carolan presiding.  Burial with military honors will be in New River Cemetery.  Visitation will be 2-8 Friday at the Champagne Funeral Chapel in Elkton.  He will lie in-state one hour prior to mass on Saturday in church.

Memorials may be made to Caseville School Band, the Michael Matczak Coach’s Heart Award or Children’s Miracle Network/Hurley Foundation.
